Return to football: training and competition schedule

As the Government have finally allowed grassroots football to resume, Wey Hill FC is ready to come back. We haven’t been idle and we’ve been working on a plan to steer the club towards a more successful future.

Training Schedule

The number of players associated with the club has grown in the past year so the club has decided to resume training with 2 sessions per week as below:

MONDAY – 20:30-22:00
THURSDAY – 20:30-22:00

Location: King’s College, Guildford, GU2 8DU

First session will be on Monday, 29th March 2021.

If you want to join any session, please get in touch here or via our Facebook Page. Everyone is welcome!

The Development Team

To continue the improvement started before lockdown, we have now officially decided to create a 2nd team for the club: Wey Hill Development.

This team will serve as a platform for everyone new joining the club or even for players returning from injuries and in need of match time. We have already seen a few players joining the Dev team and progressing to the Firsts within a month before lockdown so we’re confident that the process will be extremely successful for the club in both short and long term.

Starting the 2021-2022 season, it will act as an independent team competing in the lower divisions of Guildford & Woking Alliance Football League.

The 2020-2021 season

The GWAFL has officially curtailed the current season but have prepared a series of competitions to take place in the next couple months.

The format will be similar to Champions League (groups and knock-out stages) and will still be filtered by level. The games will start on 10th April 2021.

Wey Hill FC will join these competitions with 2 teams, in 2 different levels. All our home games will be played at Stoke Recreation Ground, Guildford unless otherwise stated.

We hope that everyone will enjoy the return to football, the news and the plan for our future. #ReadyToWin

Wey Hill Running Club

Wey Hill Running Club

The bad news of grassroots football going for into lockdown has hit us all quite hard but we keep going.

Our plans to keep well physically and mentally during this period included establishing a running club. Amazing initiative from our captain Oliver Pullan has now brought together 15+ runners to compete and stay fit during lockdown.

At the end of each week, the leader in charts will be awarded “Man of the Match” as we’d usually have our games, sponsored by A&S Market.

On top of that, Wey Hill FC will award a £30 Sports Direct voucher to the month global winner.

If you wanna compete with the players or want to support the cause, please get in touch!

October updates – managerial changes and development team

The Wey Hill FC board has decided to part ways with Salam Zafar after the Horsley game. He has been in charge as manager since end of August. We wish him best of luck in his future challenges.

The club has made a quick decision in appointing Bogdan Dogaru as caretaker manager. Bogdan is one of the founders of the club, has been a player and a secretary since 2016 and has already taken charge of his first game, a 3-3 draw against top of the league Wrecclesham Reserves.

The rest of the management team remains the same but with some shuffling in roles: Alex Uwins has been appointed Assistant Manager, Adam Maltby will now be Head Coach and Mahran Salim will assist the coaching team.

We wish them all best of luck and hope to add to the progress Wey Hill FC has made in the past years.

Wey Hill FC Development Team

In other news, numbers in training sessions have been constantly increasing and the board has decided to trial a Development (WHD) team in the next few weeks.

This will give everyone involved an opportunity to compete for a place in the 1st team but also means all players will get game time on a Saturday. The first step has been taken and WHD will meet Burpham Reserves at Stoke Rec before the Firsts play the league game this weekend. Watch this space, our club is on the right track!

If you want to be part of Wey Hill FC, contact us and come down to training on Monday evening, 9PM at King’s College Guildford.

Wey Hill FC new sponsors - Mocan Construction Group

New sponsorship announced: Mocan Construction Group!

Starting the week with good news from your favourite football club in Guildford: Mocan Construction Group have joined the Wey Hill FC family!

As most of you already know, we always strive to do better, to achieve more and to offer the best platform for our players to make progress. To do that, a grassroots football club will always need people around willing to help and to guide us on our way to success.

The newest members of our green-blue family are the people at Mocan Construction Group, a company based in Cobham and offering their services in all the Surrey and South West London areas.

Our new sponsors offer a wide range of building services, including property extensions and loft conversions. They have vast experience in domestic, commercial and industrial areas and can cater for all requirements, no matter how complex.

We immediately fell in love with their motto, “Do it once, do it right”, which sums up exactly the mentality a business should be built on nowadays. That reflects a lot in their great customer satisfaction scores.

We’d like to send our thank you to Daniel Mocanu, the founder of the company for choosing to help us and we only hope we can BUILD a successful story together for our club.

A&S Market and Wey Hill FC continue partnership

The Woking based Romanian Shop will continue to sponsor the Man of the Match Award for the 2020-2021 season.

As everyone is already used to already, we at Wey Hill FC are trying to bring communities together and also reward our players for best performances. What started as a novelty last season has now become the norm: the award for League matches MVP will consist in a gift from our sponsors which will go well with the respect of the teammates for being a key man in the game.

A&S Market is a well established provider of Romanian foods, drinks and gifts. They are based in Woking town centre, 44B Commercial Way, GU21 6HW. They serve not only the Romanian community in Surrey but other Eastern European and British nationals who have acquired the taste for the cuisine of Gheorghe Hagi’s home country.

We recommend everyone to visit the A&S Market shop and give a go at their products – you will be delighted.

Sponsors confirmed: Car & Tyres Clinic

We now have less than a week to the start of the league and throughout all the pre-season madness, we’ve been working on ensuring our club’s future by confirming sponsorships for 2020-2021.

If there is a word to describe our relationship with Car & Tyres Clinic then loyalty is the one. They have been our sponsors since 2017 and helped us unconditionally which is even more important now with the current pandemic situation. All business struggle but the boys from the garage are sticking with us and will provide us with help to make sure Wey Hill FC has everything it needs to bring success home.

Car repairs services in Ash Vale, Aldershot

Independently owned by Mr. Andrei Crăciun and Mr. Mircea Pintiuță, Car & Tyres Clinic provides a various list of services for your car maintenance. You need a general check-up, an oil change, wheel alignment or engine repair? They’re your guys!

There’s been numerous times when some of us at Wey Hill FC needed vehicle maintenance and knowing there’s someone in our big family that can provide these services made life easier. It could be the usual MOT, fixing a tyre puncture or maybe even remapping your ECU or more complex repairs, Mircea and Andrei have the experience and the trip to Car & Tyres Clinic in Ash Vale will always be a success.

Thanks boys!

There’s a new sheriff in town!

Following Mo’s departure, Wey Hill was in need of a new manager. Salam Zafar stepped up and offered a quick and reliable option to the board.

Without much deliberation, Sal has been appointed as the new boss and he already conducted his first game this Saturday. Until last Monday, Sal was part of our squad as a defender. He is well known and appreciated by everyone at the club for his dedication, his passion and his leadership skills. He is now taking a different role, stepping aside from playing and focus solely to his managerial duties.

To put Sal’s Wey Hill experience in context, we only can remember his first game for our Sunday side: slide tackled everyone one the pitch, gave away a penalty, got sent off but still managed to grab the Man of The Match award by impressing the guys with his strength and dedication.

Fast forward to yesterday, his first game in charge was somehow different but he managed to transfer his energy to his players and Wey Hill secured a relatively easy win vs Guildford Park FC (4-1).

We wish Sal best of luck as the WHFC head and hope he’ll bring another piece of silverware to the trophy cabinet!

Andrei Lipovanu at Wey Hill FC

It’s been an honour, Andrei!

Let’s take a leap back in time, 4 years ago exactly. It was the beginning of summer 2016, Wey Hill FC has just been founded and the recruitment process wasn’t even started.

On a hot Sunday morning, 5 boys met at Stoke Park for what we can safely say it was the first ever training session in our club’s history. The first 4 were part of the founding board: Bogdan Dogaru, Radu Lungu, Doru Marin and Alex Stanciu. They were excited as they were expecting this guy to turn up, coming with very good references and with an ex-professional resume. Andrei Lipovanu was the name.

He showed class from the beginning, making us all feel like little kids watching the grown-up playing. We realised then he is going to be our rock and our guidance in terms of football and that we need to sign him no matter what.

He accepted and once we had a squad and started playing friendlies he joined us on the pitch. In his first game he scored twice to bring us our first unofficial victory. He was the one! Following the same path, he netted the first competitive goal in our history and continued to deliver and to make defenders in the SHB League fear “the Wey Hill Romanian striker”.

Years went by, he stuck with us, playing for our Sunday side then later on for the Saturday team. He kept scoring and he is now the most prolific goalscorer in our history. His record is 90 goals in 70 appearances under his belt.

If you’ve met him you know he is genuinely a very nice guy, even though he can be very hot tempered from time to time. Him a referees don’t get along at all, he is the linesmen’s nightmare and a terror to all defenders. He will be remembered for his runs on the left wing, his pure class goals but also for being a very sensitive fellow.

Lipo, the forever #10, has decided to make some changes in his life (including finally getting married) and he is moving away from Guildford and from Wey Hill FC. Although it’s sad for us, we need to move on and to be happy for him.

All in all, we love you Andrei and we thank you for the years you’ve been part of our club. We all wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. You’re a Wey Hill FC Legend!

Thank you Mo!

Mo Sher, our manager, has decided to move forward and accepted the role as Head Coach for Godalming Town FC.

Actually Mo has been doing a dual role for a few months now, managing and coaching Wey Hill 2 days a week and being part of the coaching team at Godalming another 2 days week. Unfortunately for us, the moment has come when Mo was offered a better role for the G’s, increased responsibility and a better future. It’s sad but that will mean his stake at Wey Hill has dramatically taken a hit and can’t be part of the club anymore.

He remains a friend of ours and surely we’ll still see him around at games or training sessions, spying or scouting for new talents. Gonna have to put some release clauses in contracts from now on!

The news broke on Saturday for those around but the last appearance for Mo was at the Wey Trophy. The squad pulled some great performances and managed to offer the gaffer an amazing farewell gift: his first silverware!

We only hope this will get dusty and forgotten on his trophy cabinet in the following seasons next to other trophies he’ll win in his coaching & managing career.

The Wey Hill family salutes you and wishes you best of luck and a road paved with success in the years to come!
